ATEX pumps for explosion-protected zones

Pumps are a potential source of ignition during operation. The main ignition sources are hot surfaces, mechanically triggered sparks or electrostatic discharges. SAWA ATEX pumps of category 2 and 3 are designed to ensure a high level of safety during intended operation.

SAWA ATEX pumps comply with the Explosion Protection Directive 2014/34/EU and are approved for zones 1/21 and 2/22. Dry running must be avoided at all costs, as otherwise impermissibly high temperatures can occur within a short time.

The following measures can be taken to prevent impermissible operating conditions (e.g. motor overload or dry running):

  • Monitor current consumption
  • Dry-running protection by means of Liquiphant
  • Temperature monitoring on the can or mechanical seal
  • Use of double-acting mechanical seal in tandem or back-to-back arrangement
  • Pressure monitoring at the discharge nozzle
  • Flow monitor

Design option for ATEX pumps

Category 2 - high security
ATEX Zone 1 and 21

  • Bearing bracket design with double-acting mechanical seal
  • Magnetic coupling
Category 3 - normal safety
ATEX Zone 2 and 22

  • Bearing bracket version with single-acting or double-acting mechanical seal
  • Close-coupled pump with stub shaft with single-acting or double-acting mechanical seal
  • Magnetic coupling
The ATEX marking of SAWA ATEX pumps is as follows: II 2G Ex h IIC T6...T4 Gb

Motors

  • With flameproof enclosure EEx de IIC T4 (e.g. for operation with frequency inverter) for zones 1 and 2 or
  • EEx e II T3 for zones 1 and 2

Other motor types are also available on request.

Side channel pump HDP160/2-MW

Maximum process reliability with the mobile SAWA side channel pump in ATEX design, with dry-running protection and intelligent control.

Reliability, safety and efficiency are crucial in demanding applications in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. With our mobile, self-priming SAWA side channel pump, we have created a reliable complete solution for use in potentially explosive atmospheres thanks to its integrated dry-running protection. The pump with intelligent control for monitoring and regulation offers numerous highlights and protective functions for maximum process reliability:

  • Mobile, self-priming pump, with control unit and manual operating elements
  • Pump in pharmaceutical design, with SAWA residual discharge valve RE15 and surface roughness Ra < 0.4μm
  • SAWA residual emptying valve RE15 for complete emptying
  • ATEX version (bearing bracket design) for use in potentially explosive atmospheres
  • Dry-running protection to prevent damage, e.g. due to incorrect operation
  • Speed control, for flow rate control and optimization of the operating process
  • Temperature monitoring of motor and control unit to protect against overheating in the event of overload
  • Motor current monitoring with I²t limitation, for overload protection
  • Overvoltage and undervoltage protection, for protection against voltage fluctuations
  • Short-circuit and earth fault protection to maximize operational safety
  • Blockage detection, to detect blockages and protect against mechanical damage
  • Tilt protection, to ensure the stability of the pump, even under extreme operating conditions
  • Process control with PID controller, for precise regulation and control of the process
  • PID dry-running protection, with integrated protection mechanism for additional safety
