An inducer is an axial pump impeller. This is installed upstream of the actual pump impeller. The purpose of the inducer is to slightly increase the pressure on the pump impeller and thus minimize the risk of cavitation. Typical applications of the inducer can be found wherever the pressure at the pump suction nozzle is close to the vapor pressure of the liquid.
If a very good suction performance is required or for pumping liquids with a high gas content, the use of an inducer can be advantageous. The inducer must be very well matched to the desired volume range. Ideally, an NPSH value of the pump of <1m can be achieved.
