Side channel pumps

Side channel pumps belong to the group of centrifugal pumps and are characterized by their special design and pumping characteristics. They combine the properties of positive displacement and centrifugal pumps and are particularly suitable for pumping liquids containing gas. Our self-priming centrifugal pump type HD is also a (single-stage) side channel pump.

The main difference to conventional centrifugal pumps is the so-called side channel, which is located around the side of the impeller. The pump consists of the following main components:

  • Impeller: Pumps the medium by centrifugal force.
  • Side channel: Conducts the fluid in a spiral motion, creating a vacuum that supports or enables the suction process.
  • Pump casing: Contains the side channel and impeller.

The interaction of impeller and side channel creates a regenerative effect: The medium is passed through the side channel several times, which supports the pressure increase. This design enables reliable start-up even with partial gas mixing, which quickly pushes other pump types to their limits.

Advantages

  • Self-priming (even with gas-laden liquids)
  • High delivery head with low flow rate
  • Pulsation-free operation
  • Robust against vapor bubbles (cavitation)

Typical areas of application

Side channel pumps are used in a wide variety of industries:

  • CIP return: especially in dairies and food processing plants
  • Transfer: use in tank farms, e.g. for solvents etc.
  • Chemical and process engineering: pumping aggressive or slightly boiling media
  • Shipbuilding: Bilge pumps, fuel supply
  • Petrol stations: Pumping liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
  • Refrigeration technology: circulating refrigerants such as ammonia
  • Water management: pressure boosting systems, drainage

Conclusion:

Side channel pumps are an excellent choice when conveying flow rates of up to 80 m3/h at medium pressures (up to 5 bar) with the simultaneous presence of gas components. Their self-priming properties and pulsation-free operation make them a valuable solution in many technical applications.
