Side channel pumps belong to the group of centrifugal pumps and are characterized by their special design and pumping characteristics. They combine the properties of positive displacement and centrifugal pumps and are particularly suitable for pumping liquids containing gas. Our self-priming centrifugal pump type HD is also a (single-stage) side channel pump.
The main difference to conventional centrifugal pumps is the so-called side channel, which is located around the side of the impeller. The pump consists of the following main components:
- Impeller: Pumps the medium by centrifugal force.
- Side channel: Conducts the fluid in a spiral motion, creating a vacuum that supports or enables the suction process.
- Pump casing: Contains the side channel and impeller.
The interaction of impeller and side channel creates a regenerative effect: The medium is passed through the side channel several times, which supports the pressure increase. This design enables reliable start-up even with partial gas mixing, which quickly pushes other pump types to their limits.
